BluEco ~ Can the economy of the oceans really be sustainable?
Interdisciplinary collaboration to stimulate efficient decisions to reduce our impact on the oceans.
The oceans have always been seen as an infinite source of production and an easy way to massively develop the economy of countries. The anthropic activities have non-stop continued to develop, structure and industrialise. Today, the oceans have never been so exploited: fisheries, fossil extraction, marine traffic, coastal installations...
These economic activities currently generates billions of dollars at local, national and international scales. They have a direct critic impact on the human societies and also on the marine environment.
Now, what will be the ocean for the next decade?
What do we really want from the oceans?
Is it possible to seriously speak about sustainability? If yes, what should be the blue economy?
This webinar will bring together professionals, economists, researchers and students from financial companies, universities, research institutes, governmental and non-governmental organisations, working on the blue economy. The goal is to provide a forum to share current and future solutions on economy to make the ocean sustainable.
This webinar will be a contribution to the One Ocean Summit initiated by President Macron. This international event will will focus in particular on the regulation of the pelagic sea. It will be held in Brest, France, from Feb 9 to 11.

SHUSH - Noise In The Ocean - Virtual Conference
Interdisciplinary collaboration to stimulate efficient decisions to reduce our impact on the oceans.
Symposium on High Underwater Sounds from Humans - SHUSH Virtual conference
We imagine the oceans as peaceful places, a paradise full of freedom and abundance. But the reality is quite different because of the pressures of human economic activities. These generate underwater noise which radiates in great depths. For the past 50 years, acoustic observatories have been deployed and studies have made it possible to estimate the effects of these anthropic sounds on marine ecosystems.
Today, the question is not to stop human activities, but to develop solutions that aim to reduce these impacts on the environment. Technical solutions already exist and are deployed. Others are to be invented and tested quickly. Because the next few years will be decisive. More than ever, we must protect the oceans.
This virtual symposium SHUSH will bring together professionals, engineers, researchers and students from industry, universities, research institutes, government organizations and NGOs, working on ocean noises and their potential effects. The goal is to provide a forum to share current and future solutions for mitigating the underwater noise. This symposium will also encourage interdisciplinary collaborations to stimulate efficient decisions to reduce our impact on the oceans.

Life-Writing Beyond Words: Listening to Animals
Life-Writing Beyond Words: Listening to Animals is the second in a termly series exploring the non-verbal in life-writing, with contributions from Martin Bencsik, Katherine Collins, Eleanor Morgan, Olivier Adam and Aline Penitot.
Life-Writing Beyond Words is a research network and termly series of public events, hosted by myself Felix Appelbe along with the Oxford Centre for Life-Writing, and Ocean Ambassadors, that explores how we move between words and the non-verbal.
